A teenager on an electric scooter had only seconds to react after making a terrifying decision at a railway crossing in Poland.

CCTV footage captured the heart-stopping moment the rider went through lowered barriers as a train approached, seemingly attempting to cross the tracks before it was too late.

Then the teenager looked to his left.

A train was already bearing down on him.

The frightening incident happened in Boża Wola, Poland, on June 26, although the footage was released publicly on August 5.

The video shows the teenager approaching the level crossing while the warning barriers are already down. Instead of stopping and waiting for the train to pass, he rides through the gap.

It appears he is trying to make it across the tracks before the approaching train reaches the crossing.

But the timing could hardly have been worse.

As he moves onto the tracks, the teenager suddenly notices the train coming from the left.

He immediately hits the brakes.

The scooter stops, and the rider jumps away from it, landing on the road just moments before the train rushes through the crossing.

The train passes incredibly close to where he had been standing.

For several seconds, the teenager appears stunned by what has just happened.

Then, remarkably, he picks himself up, gets back onto his scooter and rides away.

There was no reported physical injury, but the incident could have ended very differently.

Railway crossings can look deceptively simple.

A person may see a train in the distance and assume there is plenty of time to cross. But trains travel at enormous speeds and cannot stop quickly.

Polish railway infrastructure operator PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe highlighted just how dangerous the teenager's decision was.

The operator said the rider escaped because he was lucky rather than because the maneuver was safe.

Officials also warned that even a small change in circumstances could have produced a completely different outcome.

A gust of wind from the passing train, for example, could have affected the rider's balance. Contact with part of the train could also have caused catastrophic injuries.

And unlike a car or motorcycle, an e-scooter offers almost no protection to the person riding it.

One of the biggest problems at railway crossings is that people sometimes judge danger by distance rather than speed.

A train can appear relatively far away while actually covering the distance extremely quickly.

Even more importantly, a train driver cannot simply slam on the brakes when someone suddenly appears on the tracks.

According to railway officials, a fast-moving train can require up to around one kilometre to come to a complete stop.

That means even if the driver sees someone on the tracks, there may be virtually nothing they can do to prevent a collision.

This is why crossing signals and barriers exist in the first place.

When the warning lights are activated and the barriers come down, the message is simple: wait.

The operator also warned that trains can have protruding components and generate powerful air movement as they pass.

Even someone who avoids direct contact with the train can still be placed in serious danger.

For an e-scooter rider, standing close to a moving train can also create additional risks because the rider has very little stability compared with someone inside a vehicle.

Electric scooters have become increasingly common in cities around the world.

They're convenient, inexpensive and easy to maneuver.

But that maneuverability can sometimes create a false sense of security.

A rider may feel capable of squeezing through small gaps or stopping quickly if necessary.

Railway crossings are completely different.

The consequences of a mistake are far greater, and there is almost no margin for error.

Unlike a vehicle, an e-scooter cannot protect its rider during a collision with a train.

Even a relatively minor fall onto railway tracks can become extremely dangerous when a train is approaching.

The teenager in Poland ultimately rode away from the crossing.

There was no reported injury from the incident.
