Investigators say no response from the captain was recorded.

It eventually reached approximately 17,000 feet.
Then the weather became a major threat
The aircraft continued its flight.
But as it approached São Paulo, the situation began to deteriorate.
The crew encountered significant icing.
At one point, the co-pilot reportedly said that he had forgotten to activate the de-icing system.
The captain responded that the systems could be activated.
He then apparently realized that they had already been switched on.
Despite the developing situation, the conversation reportedly continued.
Then conditions became much more serious.
The aircraft began experiencing significant ice accumulation.
The crew became increasingly aware of the problem.
But by then, the aircraft's performance was already deteriorating.
The final moments happened incredibly quickly
At approximately 1:20 p.m. local time, the co-pilot reportedly commented on the significant icing and said he would activate the airframe de-icing system.
The captain reportedly responded that the system was not functioning.
Less than a minute later, investigators recorded sounds consistent with buffeting inside the cockpit.
The co-pilot again mentioned icing.
Then the stall warning activated.
Shortly afterward, the aircraft's autopilot disconnected.
The situation deteriorated rapidly.
The aircraft lost control and entered a flat spin.
It descended thousands of feet per minute.
Investigators determined that the aircraft completed several rotations before crashing into a residential area in Vinhedo, near São Paulo.
The flight had been traveling from Cascavel to Guarulhos International Airport.
There were 58 passengers and four crew members aboard.
Why ice became so dangerous
